A Touch Of Evil! -or- The Packaged Package

Got a package from the fart knockers over at Evil Cycling today.

I excitedly opened the package and confirmed that it was indeed the jersey I ordered and not a pile of entrails or steaming poo, or any other type of pile for that matter.

Why the rubber gloves you ask? The buttholes at Evil Cycling have a strict handling policy which they detail here, here, and here... and to rule out any confusion regarding their intentions, they said this and finally drove the point home here.

After unpacking the jersey it was off to the patented Cycle Jerk Centrifuge where any particles or wiffs of sackage will be removed before it's ready to wear.

I think it's rather fetching, brings out the black in my eyes.

Highlights Of Bloggery: 2010

With the new year a few hours away, it seems like a good time to look over some highlights of the past year of blogging. Click on the image to view the posts.

I should mention here that for some reason this post entitled "Pink Floyd Thursday" gets more hits than anything I've done in the past 3 years. Since posted, it has revived an average amount of hits, nothing to write home about. In November something happened, and it now gets around 2000 hits a month. I believe this is due to a Google image search for the above image. Thanks Google!

Not a bad year.

Happy 2011!

Mondays Can Be So Awesome

You're probably in a state of vigorous fist clenching vein popping disagreement right now. Before you hurt yourself or anyone around you, I submit this photo I took of a hawk as proof that Mondays can in fact, be awesome.

It was right outside my house and it was awesome.

You're god damn right it's Monday...

Cycle Jerk: Socialized Media

A little while back I started a Cycle Jerk YouTube channel, then I caved to peer pressure and started a Twitter page. I always thought twitter was kind of a silly thing to do, but now that I've done it I realized it's astonishingly  silly. To further my silliness I've created a Facebook fan page as well.

Love me.

Spandex Vs. Wool: This Is Gonna Get Crazy

While still in the after glow of the DC Tweed Ride, I thought it would be appropriate to put the two materials that seem to have polarized the cycling community up against each other. Those being spandex and wool.

There is only one proper way to scientifically prove which material is more suited for cyclists, and that's to throw a spandex clad cyclist and a sheep into the Cycle Jerk Particle Accelerator and smash them into each other at mind bending speeds. I know I know, this might create a spandex/wool (Spoondex™) super nova that will destroy the planet in a violent moisture wicking flash of textiles, but I've got to get this settled once and for all.

Before I get going on all that, I thought I would ride into work today wearing one spandex arm warmer and one wool arm warmer to see the difference for myself.

Let me just say that this is in no way scientific. There are a ton of variables which I'm not accounting for and am just using the arm warmers I happen to have.

For this test I am using my tried and true, seven year old spandex arm warmer from Bikes USA which have a soft fleece-like liner on one arm, and a brand new Pearl Izumi Merino wool seamless arm warmer on the other. The weather is still a little warm but that just creates a better environment for testing wickability.

The first difference I notice between the two is the feeling. The spandex is a lot tighter giving that compression/aero feel, where the wool fits well but not nearly as tight. I guess it depends on the ride weather this is a plus or a minus. The wool also does have a slight itchiness to it. Everyone says Merino wool is sans itchy but there is a little there, not enough to bother me but it's there. Initially I found the wool to be warmer than the spandex, but I was still in my kitchen at that point.

Once I started riding they both provided about the same degree of warmth but the wool was letting more air through than the spandex. When my arms started to sweat, that extra air was welcome. I would say that at speed the spandex did a better job of moisture management than the wool, but not by much. Both arms were sweaty when I got to work.

Two places where the wool excels over spandex are odor and warmth when wet. Wool doesn't hold onto odor like spandex does and can go a lot longer without washing. For the a bike commuter that is a pretty big plus. Also when wool is wet it still provides warmth where spandex doesn't.

The bottom line for arm warmers is the wool ultimately feels better. There is something cozy about the wool feel that you don't get with the spandex. That said it's not like I'm running out to buy merino bib tights. Wool and spandex both have uses where they excel, but for fall and winter commuting I'm going to opt for cozy when I can get it.

It's hump day... so get humping dammit!

It's Really Not That Hot

So everyone has been freaking out in anticipation for today's scorcher but I think it's pretty nice out. It doesn't seem that humid today and there is a nice breeze without which it would be hot for sure. This morning I put a second water bottle cage on the LHT (yeah you know me) and pounded the fluids the whole way in. It was nice. I didn't push it too hard and tried to stay in the shade at stop lights. There is something about temperature extremes that pose a nice little challenge for the bike commuter. I was looking forward to some plus 100 agony and it just didn't happen. There's always the ride home. :)

Who Summoned The Fail Whale?

I don't twit, I have never twatted, maybe that's why I love when things go wrong in the twitterverse. After reading the article about this mornings attack that brought down twitter for a few hours I noticed a big steaming pile of irony, top right, on the WIRED Epicenter page.

Although you've probably seen it before it seems only right to post this video again.

Swap Meet Met

As many of you know, I launched my own marketing campaign for the WABA swap meet in Silver Spring this past Saturday. I did this mainly because they don’t do enough marketing and nobody shows up making it hard to sell my junk. Anyway, my marketing prowess paid off. I met several people who said they came to the event because they heard about it here, or on other blogs linking back to mine. Hurray for the internets!

Thanks to Gwadzilla, The WashCycle, and DCBlogs for throwing me a shout out.

Here are a few photos of the hot swapping in action.

I can't remember your names but I enjoyed
talking chit with you guys.

See anything you like? A lot of that is still for sale.

People came,
swapping happened,
it was better than last year,
you're welcome.

Grey Skies Are Gonna Clear Up! Oh Wait, No They're Not...

The commute in this morning was rough for several reasons; the first of witch is that it finally rained last night after a week of daily threats making Sligo Creek Parkway a tangle of road closures and downed trees. Don't get me wrong, it was fun, only because the rain is now warm enough that shorts and a jersey are all the outer protection I need. Also because I wasn't in a car! (tee hee)

The second reason is that over the three day weekend my friends and I emptied these growlers (lovingly filled by the good folks at Rock Bottom Brewery in Bethesda) twice.

Onto other oddities of the long weekend. While out for a ride at Rosaryville I came across this scene.  A toaster and percolator from the 50's left trailside for anyone with a long enough extension cord.

This oddity truly took me (and my wallet) by surprise. The CycleLife Cafe under the bridge in GTown is something to behold. I have heard of high end bike boutiques popping up in NYC but had never experienced one for myself. Equipped with a coffee bar, an Apple Store like environment, ultra high end product line, and a ridiculous mark-up, the CycleLife Cafe will surely get the Georgetown polo circuit in a tizzy.  Not being their target demographic, I will merely windowshop as I can't even afford a Clif Bar there. ($2.63 WTF!)

Next up is the building that won the Cycle Jerk award last week for being the building that most looked like Miami threw up in downtown Bethesda, has received yet another badge of honor, this time from the city itself. Keep up the good work assholes!

And finally, it looks like the purple line project has been scrapped for the ever popular Runoff Line or the "Brown Line". This will make it possible for runoff to easily flow between Bethesda and Silver Spring eliminating back ups and log jams in local creeks and waterways, at the same time giving the area youth something to spray paint on.

May 26th, the Tuesday that's pulling double duty as a Monday as well.
