Most of my jerseys can be worn twice in a week before they become somewhat offensive. I throw them on the pile (much to my wife's chagrin) and move on to the next jersey. However, two of my jerseys have crossed over to the dark side. If I wear them, they are unbearable by the time I get to work. By the time I get home they will have become so powerful that the odor lingers long after I throw them in the backyard. The offending jersey must be washed several times before it can be worn again, only to stink just as bad, thus the great stink cycle continues.
No more! I'm moving to merino wool. Hailed as the non-stinky all weather miracle material on the interwebs, merino wool is praised by most anyone who owns some. I may have to sell some blood or bike parts to get the good stuff but I've had enough with the stench and the spousal complaints.

I like smartwool jerseys which I can wear all week without offensive odor. They don't have to be cycling specific, especially for the commute I don't care if they have rear pockets, just look for a 3/4 zipper.

I've got a couple of Endura bah-bah long sleeve base layers. They're brilliant. Not too pricey, and can be used for about a week before they need washing.
ReplyDeleteSwobo, bro.
ReplyDeleteSo glad you are making the switch. Ibex is my wool of choice... sometimes they overstyle, but not always, and the quality is excellent. I also have a friend who likes the Jonesware.
ReplyDeleteI go the cheap route - search Ebay for new w/o tags wool shirts. I've picked up a variety of weights. Merino is heads above all of the plastic shirts I've been given for both warmth and wicking moisture. With UA, I get cold spots; with wool, all is comfy.
ReplyDeleteSee Bonktown. Hincape long-sleeve wool base layers for less than an Under Armor rig, and Smartwool socks for $5 a pair. The socks keep your shoes odor free, too.
ReplyDeleteSmartwool is the best. Check Geartrade.com to find some that won't break the bank.
ReplyDeleteI'm a fan of Kuchark's clothing for cyclists. Prices are more than reasonable and the jerseys are of excellent quality.
ReplyDeleteI have also owned a few Rapha jerseys. While I don't think a Rapha jersey – or any other jersey of any material – will remain odor-free for too many rides, mine outlasted my collection of lycra jerseys. Rapha jerseys come with a high price, and with many fine, small touches.
Wool is the only way!
ReplyDeleteNo such thing as a "breathable" synthetic...pure sheepshit! And don't even get me started on "wicking"...
